For its 2019 Annual Meeting, the Brush Square Museums Foundation proudly presents The Survivors / Los Sobrevivientes: A Reading of the First Act, a play by Katie Bender. The play takes place during the 1836 siege of the Alamo. We hear intimate conversations of the surprising alliances necessary to survive the shifting and mercurial battle. The play is based on the historically documented group of women, children and enslaved people who survived the battle of the Alamo, chief among them Susanna Dickinson. It’s an epic historical drama told by a diverse ensemble of people who didn’t make it into the history books.
Katie Bender is a playwright, performer and theater maker. On the 2015 Kilroys List and a finalist for the inaugural Shakespeare’s Sister Fellowship, she has her M.F.A. from The University of Texas and was a 2016-2017 Jerome Fellow at The Playwrights’ Center.  She is currently a museum education specialist at the Susanna Dickinson Museum.
